The Turkish Connection A Birth of an Assassin Novel Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Rik Stone Dennis Kleinman Books Reviews
The Turkish Connection A Birth of an Assassin by Rik Stone follows Mehmet through his life as he suffers tragedy and learns skills that make him stronger. It beings in the 1950’s in the slums of Istanbul after Mehmet’s mother dies. His mother’s death prompts his father Levent to make a plan to steal from a powerful plan in order to be able to start a new and better life with his son. This plan goes terribly wrong when he is caught, murdered and tossed into the river. Not knowing what happened to his father Mehmet assumes he’s been abandoned and is then kidnapped from the streets by a group that trains him to be a thief. It is not long before Levent’s mistake catches up to Mehmet and nearly gets him killed as well. Fortunately for Mehmet Levent’s friend Yuri is the one who finds Mehmet in the water, fishes him out, and nurses him back to health. All of this tragedy drive Mehmet down a path towards becoming the best warrior that he can be. This story is intense and emotional. Despite the bad things that Mehmet does you will still find yourself rooting for his success. I look forward to reading more of Stone’s work in the future.
"The Turkish Connection" by Rik Stone is the second book of the "Birth of an assassin" series, although it is not a continuation, a real sequel, but a separate story. The book is set in Instanbul and other areas of Turkey starting from about 1950s until 1970s. The main character is the young orphan Mehmet and the novel starts with the death of his father when Mehmet is only eight years old. The young boy tries to "survive" and grow up in a place where he is surrounded by violence, poverty, crime and where criminal activity is a means of survival for the majority... He wants to know who killed his father and why...and the only way to discover it is to join the street life...
It is a very well written thriller book, full of suspense and with many pretty significant plot twists along the story. I would recommend!
Eight-year old Mehmet’s life unknowingly was spared the night his father was murdered. After his father’s childhood friend Beyrek killed him, he told the leader of his gang of street urchins to “take care of him”. The young leader misunderstood setting out to teach him to be a street thief. When Beyrek realizes he is alive, he sets up again to have him killed. A police chief on Beyrek’s payroll shoots Mehmet. Diving off the pier, he begins to drown only to be pulled from the water by a passing boat piloted by Yuri another friend of his father’s. Here the real story begins setting Mehmet on a new adventure that is even more dangerous and illegal…
Action-packed from beginning to end full of anger and revenge as Mehmet seeks to find out what really happened to his family. Set in Istanbul of the 1950’s Stone writes a believable suspense thriller with unforgettable characters, especially Mehmet and the street urchins. I couldn’t get enough of this remarkable page-turner and the author’s uncanny yet powerful ability to tell a story. I found this book sometimes dark, however deep and engaging a perfect mix of suspense and so much more - an exceptional read.
I was uncertain starting this book because of the setting. I’ve never been further east than West Germany and Istanbul is a place I can’t personally identify with. But Stone does such a good job of personalizing his protagonist that I quickly invested in the story. The story generated enough interest that I spent a lot of time on Google Earth, exploring the locations mentioned in the book. This is an International thriller, complete with Russian arms, drug, and sex trade. This novel can stand toe to toe with anything from the pen of Dan Brown, Robert Ludlum, or Stieg Larson.
