Bernie Carbo is an example of man who has had a lot of up and downs in life. He had a very traumatic childhood. He was abused and neglected and grew up in a very dysfunctional household. He was a gifted baseball player and was so talented that he was a first round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds. He was chosen before the great Johnny Bench.Carbo became addicted to alcohol and drugs at a young age. He had a very painful youth and sought to escape from his problems. He had some good moments in his baseball career, most notably when he hit two clutch home runs in the 1975 World Series. He tied up the pivotal game 6 with a pinch hit home run. This was an unforgettable moment in what many baseball historians consider the greatest game ever played.
Carbo's addictions led him to spiral out of control. They cost him his family and his health. His mother committed suicide and Bernie was thinking of taking his own life. Some former teammates helped him and he got the treatment he needed. In addition to detox, he established a relationship with Jesus Christ. Bernie became a changed man. He began to minister to others and he has been sharing the Gospel for close to two decades with Diamond Club Ministry.
I had the privilege of meeting Bernie. He is a great guy and he has a wonderful family. I saw him preach in a church in Carver, Massachusetts. He is passionate about sharing the healing power of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This is a man who has a genuine and authentic faith. He is a changed man. He is completely open and honest with past mistakes. I have never seen anyone take ownership for failures in the past the way this man has. He lives every day now ministering to others and telling people about the goodness of God.
The book itself is of excellent quality. There is a brief introduction of each chapter. Bernie tells the reader about his experiences in most of the text. He goes into detail about his formative years, his painful mistakes, and times he was victimized. He spends a lot of time talking about baseball as well. There are many humorous incidents relayed. For example, he told about the time he failed to recognize owner Tom Yawkey of the Red Sox. He gave him twenty dollars and asked him to get him some burgers and fries.
This book is very good at a lot of levels. There is plenty of insights about baseball. He talks about his admiration for Sparky Anderson and relates how much Sparky meant to him. He talks about how tutelage from the great Ted Williams made him a better hitter. He talks about his relationship with the free-spirited Buffalo Heads like Bill Lee and Fergie Jenkins. Sports fans will love the book.
More casual fans will find Bernie's story compelling. There were heartbreaks and triumphs. This was a man who lived with a great amount of pain and the story ends in the happiest manner possible. I have seen with my own eyes that this is true. I saw Bernie's lovely wife Tammy ministering alongside him and he was doting on three of his grandchildren. God has lifted him out of the depths. He was literally at death's door, but Jesus saved him and changed his life.
There was a section at the end of each chapter written by psychologist Dr. Peter Hantzis. This added to the credibility of the book. He expalined how the hurts and pains of the past crippled Bernie emotionally. He brought up the stages of development of Dr. Erik Erikson and explained that Carbo had baggage from a traumatic youth that would debilitate anyone. Dr. Hantzis and Carbo do not excuse his bad behavior and selfishness in the past, but an explanation is given with the purpose of giving a case study. This can be very useful if you see a friend or loved one heading down the wrong path. There are signs to look for and this can be helpful in setting up a successful intervention.
"Saving Bernie Carbo" is both a cautionary tale and a story of triumph. God is in the redemption business and he has done amazing work in Bernie's life. The book is a great read for baseball fans. Bernie's main purpose for writing the story is to tell people about the goodness of God and the life-changing power of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

My husband was thrilled to get the book. It was a Father's Day gift. He couldn't put it down. He remembered almost every player mentioned in the book. It is well written, interesting, and especially inspirational. It is a must read for baseball fans of the '70s and '80s. A great testament to the power of God in helping Bernie Carbo overcome so many adversities in his life.

Very interesting read, did take some time to get used to as at the end of most chapters Dr. Hantzis does give analysis of Bernie Carbo's progression into drugs and alcohol.
This is a very good read about a pro baseball player who, despite the fame, nearly lost it all due to his addictions. Carbo shares the ups and downs of his personal and professional life, and Dr. Hintzis provides a clinical analysis of the various experiences that Bernie has had to deal with, good and bad. A unique collaboration that provides the reader more than just the usual account of a damaged athlete's life.
An outstanding book! If you love baseball, you will especially love this book. If you don't, you will still enjoy it! No matter where you are in life, this book will speak volumes to you!
